Recollection of the first post-war meeting between two sailors – Hans Offizier and Alfred Kühn

Recollection of the first post-war meeting between two sailors part of the crew of torpedo boat T24, which sank on 24 August 1944 in the Gironde estuary.

Manfred Kühn’s recollection

That photo is how I remember the first meeting between my father Alfred Kühn and Hans Offizier in 1959. Both had been sailors aboard the German torpedo boat T24. Hans Offizier had came from his home town of Köln in Germany to our home at the Moulin de Béning, in Béning, Moselle France to make contact with my father.

He made this journey in two days and he covered 300 km on a moped. On the attached picture you can see his equipment: a rucksack and a bag in front. On the luggage rack at the back of the moped is the bag with all the camping equipment, tent, stove, sleeping bag etc., plus a toolbox and two bags.

That’s how I remember it.
